The firm has been here through everything this part of Scotland has been through: the industrial years, the difficult decades that followed the decline of heavy industry, and the reshaping of the local economy that came after.
The businesses we work with today are very different from the clients who walked through the door in 1936, but the firm’s reason for being here is the same: to give growing businesses the financial support and insight they need.
1936
Jim Benson forms JR Benson & Co, bringing together two existing practices, John Benson & Co and John Henry & Son. Alongside the accountancy work, the firm operates as a Halifax Building Society agency in Anderson Street, Airdrie. In the early years, the Halifax commissions brought in more than the accountancy fees!
1973
Robin Wood, a former Queen’s Park amateur footballer, joins the firm which becomes Benson Wood & Co.
1998
John Moffat joined as a Partner as regulation was increasing across the profession. John came in and put the systems and procedures in place to make the firm legally compliant as an audit-regulated firm, and kept it that way as requirements continued to grow.
1999
Benson Wood & Co acquires John Carey & Co, another established Airdrie practice, bringing more clients and a bigger team.
2020
John Moffat takes over as sole owner, just as Covid hit. Because we’d already become fully digital in the previous few years, we were able to keep running and supporting clients throughout the pandemic without disruption.
2021
Chris Wilson is appointed director.
2023
We moved to our current home at Belgrave Court in Bellshill. We now have modern offices with proper meeting spaces, enabling us to meet clients and grow as a firm.
2026
Celebrating 90 years in Lanarkshire! It’s been quite a journey, and the firm is in the best shape it’s ever been.
